ResumoPresumably he had become even at that early period already infected with "revolutionary" ideas-ideas, however, which never affected his faith.Imprisoned in 1794 and transported to Spain for safekeeping, he did not return to his native country until 1817, and then, as a member of Mina's expedition.Captured shortly after his arrival, he was impris oned by the Inquisition until the reestablishment of the constitution in 1820.He was excluded from the general amnesty then proclaimed and confined in the Castillo de San Juan de Uliia, where he utilized his leisure to write his Carta de despidida a los mexicanos, which became one of the most widely-read pamphlets of his day.Why this Carta has not been re printed by Senor Robles is somewhat puzzling.Transported to Havana, he escaped to the United States and finally returned to Mexico in 1822 to become one of the most uncompromising opponents of Iturbide. He was one of the deputies arrested by Iturbide, but, as usual, he escaped from prison.Elected a member of the Constituent Congress after Iturbide's deposition, he spent the last few years of his life in a vigorous and vicious attack on the federalistas led by Ramos Arizpe, a strange position indeed for so consistent a liberal and so acute a thinker to take.
