ResumoThe announcement, in 2006, of the implementation of a port in the municipality of Sao Joao da Barra (SJB), north of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, caused great expectations around this enterprise, associating it to the development and economic growth of the region. The following work discusses to what extent the implementation of the Complexo Portuario do Acu (Acu Port Complex), characterized as a large investment project (LIP), has influenced changes in the formal labor market in the municipality of Sao Joao da Barra. This is an analysis based on (i) a research on data that corroborates the quantification of the evolution of employment in the referred municipality; (ii) the establishment of the transformations occurred in the its labor market between the years 2006 and 2017. The analyses work on the basis of bibliographic and documentary researches and surveys on secondary data collected in the administrative records of the Relacao Anual de Informacoes Sociais (RAIS) (Annual Social Information Report). The period selected is 2006, the last year before starting the implementation of the Complexo Portuario do Acu , and 2017, year that represents a period of ten years after the beginning of the construction work. Findings suggest the implementation of the Complexo caused significant structural alterations in the formal labor market, changing job profiles in the municipality in question.
