ResumoThe greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe In 2018, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders (JVS-VL), a joint bimonthly publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery and the American Venous Forum, starts its 6th year with this issue. We would like to thank all who have contributed to the success of this journal during the past 5 years. We started our journey as Editors with a new editorial team in July 2016 and we knew from the beginning that this journey would be challenging. The world of medical publishing is rapidly evolving, but we also understood that the steepness of the hill “only adds to the joy and glory to the climb.” Comments and critiques we received have been overwhelmingly favorable, as have the metrics that we have monitored. However, to paraphrase Goethe, as we ended the year 2017, we celebrated not where we stand but the direction toward which the JVS Publications are moving. The Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders is part of a suite of publications that includes the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Cases and Innovative Techniques (JVS-CIT), which will be indexed and available on PubMed Central in the coming weeks. The JVS:Venous and Lymphatic Disorders has attained a prominent position among academic medical and surgical journals by presenting the latest research and education related to the prevention, investigation, diagnosis, and management of venous and lymphatic disorders. We have published many important papers related to the evolution of venous disease management, from hospital based to outpatient percutaneous therapy, as well as new research related to endovascular technology of venous and lymphatic disorders and wound care. The Journal has also included unique case reports and published papers on innovative techniques. Through the journals, we are committed to supporting vascular surgeons, phlebologists, and all venous and lymphatic disease specialists, including researchers and trainees. Today, JVS-VL has a circulation of 3721, with online monthly visits at more than 2500 and an Impact Factor that increased from 0.882 to 1.143. JVS-VL is an international journal that published articles from 25 countries in 2017. Fifty-five percent of manuscripts submitted to the JVS Journals come from abroad, with the most frequent non-U.S. manuscripts sent from China, Japan, Italy, and The Netherlands. We thank our international authors and reviewers for their valuable contributions. Many of the changes we have implemented improve dissemination of the ever-increasing volume of information our journals provide. Each issue of JVS-VL is accompanied by a video summary by the Editors. These videos summarize selected papers, including the Editors' Choice, that can be downloaded free of charge for 1 month. Also, summaries by the authors are inserted in the Table of Content and “Highlights” are provided for each clinical and basic research paper to help readers find the articles that interest them. Subscribers can also earn free AMA PRA Category I Credit by reading the CME article in each issue and completing the online exam and evaluation. Newly appointed Assistant Editor, Dr Paul DiMuzio, is pioneering the journals' social media efforts on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, reaching 10,000 professionals worldwide on LinkedIn alone. Dr DiMuzio has also started a virtual JVS journal club and works diligently with the SVS staff to promote journal news releases. As we complete another successful year, we believe that the state of the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders is strong and, more importantly, as publishing evolves, we are moving in the right direction. We express our deep gratitude to our readers, authors, reviewers, editors, staff, publisher, and our sponsoring societies for their many contributions – the JVS Publications would not be successful without you! We wish you and your families all the best for the end of the Holiday Season and a healthy and prosperous New Year of 2018. Scholarly peer review is the most important process to assure the high quality of a scientific publications. Introduced more than 300 years ago in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, peer review validates research, acts as a quality control filter, and many times greatly improves the content of a submitted manuscript. During 2017, 411 reviewers helped the Editors of the JVS journals make important decisions on the fate of more than 1400 manuscripts. For providing their talent, time, and effort so generously, we are extremely appreciative of the many expert peer reviewers. We would like to acknowledge our Associate and Assistant Editors, who have worked with us tirelessly in 2017 to raise the quality of the JVS journals. Dr Greg Moneta served as Clinical Studies Editor of the JVS- VL and has done an outstanding job screening clinical research papers, directing the review process, and making important decisions on many manuscripts. After 7 years of outstanding service to the journals, our Basic Science Editor, Dr Peter K. Henke, completed his assignment in 2017. We are grateful for his dedication and contributions. We express our gratitude for a job so well done. Our new Basic Science Editor, Dr Alan Dardik, will start his assignment in January of 2018. Welcome Dr Dardik. Dr Cynthia K. Shortell has completed her first year as our Review Editor. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are essential to assure the impact of a journal, and we thank Dr Shortell for her enthusiasm and her determination to continue to strengthen the reviews in our journal in 2018. Dr Michael C. Dalsing excelled in 2017 in his new role as Editor of abstracts and book reviews. We thank him for his important contributions and look forward to working with him in a different role in 2018. We are currently searching for a new Assistant Editor to take over Dr Dalsing's position and serve as Editor of the new JVS-VL section Vascular Vantage Point: Review and Commentary of Key Publications. In 2017, Dr Paul DiMuzio joined us as the new Editor for Social Media and Press Releases. With the help of Dr Daniel Han, Dr DiMuzio has greatly increased our online readership by active participation in LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. We are grateful to Drs DiMuzio and Han for their pioneering efforts to introduce JVS to the world audience of public media. We had a busy Editorial Board in 2017 and we greatly appreciate their important contributions to our peer review process. In addition to review and re-review of a large number of original articles, our editorial board members frequently contributed to JVS journals with commentaries and editorials. Members of the Editorial Board perform an average of 20 reviews each year and during 2017, and this accounted for 34% of all the reviews performed. Jose Ignacio Almeida Zachary M. Arthurs Ruth L.
