Resumo

In 1944, Russian physicist Yevgenii Konstantinovich Zavoiskii (1907-1976) succeeded in observing an electron paramagnetic signal for the first time, and reported it in his dissertation for the degree of Dr. Nauk (this was actually his second dissertation for the degree). Zavoiskii's report to be read before the Division of Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences aroused almost universal skepticism among the Moscow members of the Institute of Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, who doubted that such a sensitive instrument could be built by a single individual at Kazan, working alone. The intervention of the 1978 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894-1984) allowed Zavoiskii to silence the critics by reproducing his results. This chapter explores Zavoiskii's life and work culminating in his ground-breaking discovery.
