portuguesO presente artigo apresenta o projecto de investigacao Um complexo portuario milenar no Barlavento Algarvio: a arqueologia do estuario do rio Arade, enquadrado pelo CHAM (FCSH/ NOVA|UAc – Faculdade de Ciencias Sociais e Humanas, da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e da Universidade dos Acores) em parceria com o Museu de Portimao (Câmara Municipal de Portimao). O projecto centra-se na arqueologia do estuario do rio Arade, nomeadamente nos seus contextos de naufragio e de fundeadouro, numa abordagem diacronica. De facto, ao longo de mais de dois mil anos o Arade foi palco de uma intensa e continua dinâmica maritima que se encontra bem patente nos testemunhos materiais que sobreviveram ate aos nossos dias. Constituiu-se assim como um dos principais portos do espaco actualmente portugues, beneficiando de uma localizacao privilegiada entre o Mediterrâneo e o Atlântico. Os mais recentes resultados desta investigacao advem da campanha de campo realizada durante o mes de Junho de 2018. Os trabalhos incidiram essencialmente em Arade B, um sitio complexo, com varios contextos de naufragio e fundeadouro romanos e modernos, e no navio do seculo XIX GEO 5. Estes permitiram a identificacao e recolha de dados e artefactos ineditos, que contribuem significativamente para o reconhecimento da importância historica do rio Arade. Estes resultados sao particularmente relevantes devido a eminente realizacao de dragagens no Porto de Portimao, que ira afectar directamente todos os sitios arqueologicos conhecidos no estuario. Para o futuro e continuidade do projecto preve-se o fomento e consolidacao dos tres principais vectores que o justificam: investigacao cientifica sobre a arqueologia maritima; divulgacao e sensibilizacao da sociedade para o patrimonio cultural subaquatico; salvaguarda do patrimonio arqueologico no âmbito de projectos portuarios. EnglishThis paper presents the research project A millenary harbour in the western Algarve (Portugal): the archaeology of the Arade estuary, developed by CHAM (FCSH/NOVA|UAc – Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, of the NOVA University of Lisbon and the University of the Azores) with the partnership of the Portimao Museum. The project aims the archaeology of the Arade river estuary, shipwrecks and anchorage sites, in a long-time approach. Indeed, over more than two thousand years Arade was the scene of an intense and continuous maritime dynamic clearly evident in the remains that have survived to this day. It is thus one of the main ports of today´s Portuguese territory, benefiting from a privileged location between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The most recent results of this research were obtained in the field campaign that took place in June 2018. They were carried out in Arade B, a complex site, with several Roman and Early Modern Age shipwrecks and anchorage sites and in the 19th century GEO 5 ship. It was possible to identify and recover unknown data and artefacts, which contributes significantly for the recognition of the historical importance of the Arade river. These results are particularly relevant due to the imminent dredging works that will occur in the Port of Portimao and will directly affect these archaeological sites. Considering the future and continuity of the project we foresee the increment and strengthening of the three main vectors that justifies it: maritime archaeology scientific research; society outreach and awareness for the underwater cultural heritage; protection of the archaeological heritage in the scope of port projects
