Resumo

The Niolu, a vast central basin through which runs the Golo high valley, is surrounded by the highest mountains of Corsica, in particular Monte Cinto (2 710 m) and is enclosed in the crystalline mountain chain of the island. The ridges surrounding the Niolu area show a varied geology - rhyolitic as in the case of the Cinto Massif in the North or granitic as the Punta Artica in the South. The passes are few and their access difficult to the north, north-west to the Fango Valley, west towards the Porto Gulf, south and southeast to the Tavignano. The only opening towards the low eastern valleys is Scala di Santa Regina, a narrow pass 10 km long, along which in olden days ran a hazardous mule track replaced less than a century ago by a forest road. The Niolu climate shows a series of thermic and pluviometrie gradients investigated in detail by A. Pinguet. Snow cover is light in the basin, but heavy and long-lasting on the ridges and especially at Vergio Pass where wind is frequent. Seasons are well contrasted. The water economy of soils is strongly influenced by forest cover in the basin, except on the northern slope of the Golo valley.
