ResumoThis chapter reveals that anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are psychiatric disorders characterized by disordered food intake, purging behavior, and distorted body image. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by weight loss that is sufficient to suppress or delay the onset of menstruation. It is the only psychiatric disorder that requires an endocrine disturbance, amenorrhea, as a diagnostic criterion. In contrast, in bulimia nervosa, purging behavior is more prominent. Both disorders can result in death due to starvation, electrolyte imbalances, and ipecac abuse. In addition to this considerable mortality, there is also important morbidity, which is often long lasting. Because patients are affected during the years of their lives that are crucial for the development of vocational and social skills, these disorders can cause a lifelong impairment in their personal and family lives as well as in professional development.
