Resumo

The nature of intergranular corrosion with associated theories is introduced, followed by a summary about the influence of metallurgical aspects, grain boundary structure and grain boundary connectivity. The occurrence of intergranular corrosion in aluminum alloys, stainless steels, and nickel alloys is then discussed, with a focus on fundamental mechanisms and mitigation strategies. The last section gives a comprehensive overview of standard practices and test methods for intergranular corrosion testing.
