ResumoThe cross section for producing ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ at velocities close to that of the center of mass was studied for the $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$+$^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ reaction at $\frac{E}{A}=1.05$ GeV. The ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ data show a flat plateau around ${y}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}=0$. The $\frac{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}}$ ratio of 1.5 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 is much lower than published theoretical predictions. Data were also obtained for carbon and uranium targets.NUCLEAR REACTIONS C($^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)Ca($^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$,${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$), U($^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$,${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$); $\frac{E}{A}=1050$ MeV; measured $\ensuremath{\sigma}(E,\ensuremath{\theta})$.
