Resumo

Abstract Small area variation analysis examines the variation in the rates of performance of a medical procedure, such as an appendectomy, across geographic areas. The approach is used to identify procedures or DRGs in which there is too much variation, with the goal of improving guidelines or identifying outlying providers. Unless the number of procedures per area is very large, variations analyses present a variety of statistical challenges.
