EnglishThe purpose of this article is to discuss space in art, with an emphasis on virtual space, the space of painting, which also constitutes a space of colors. This debate is constructed from the conceptions of symbolic forms of Ernst Cassirer, and of significant forms and virtual space of Susanne K. Langer. On the basis of these authors, one starts from the understanding of art as a symbolic form capable of producing representations of the world and creating artistic spaces, proper to the universe of painting, but products of a typically human mind. For that, we take as reference the works “Memory of the Garden at Etten” (1888) and “A Pair of Leather Clogs” (1889), both by Vincent van Gogh, from which we elaborate a debate on these symbolic forms produced from the subjectivities of the life of the artist, full of particular meanings, but also producers of a very specific symbolic universe, namely virtual space. To develop this work, the conceptions of art and symbol supported by Suzanne K. Langer were taken as our theoretical direction. portuguesO artigo que apresentamos tem por finalidade discutir sobre o espaco na arte, comenfasenoespacovirtual,oespacodapintura,quetambem se constitui como umespaco de cores. Este debate e construido a partir das concepcoes de formas simbolicas de Ernst Cassirer, e de formas significantes e espaco virtual de Susanne K. Langer. Com base nestes autores, parte-se do entendimento da arte como uma forma simbolica capaz de produzir representacoes de mundo e criar espacialidades artisticas, proprias do universo da pintura, mas produtos de uma mente tipicamente humana. Para tanto, tomamos como referencia as obras “Memory of the Garden at Etten” [Memorias do Jardim de Etten] (1888) e “A Pair of Leather Clogs” (1889) [Um Par de Tamancos de Madeiras], ambas deVincent vanGogh, da qual elaboramos um debate sobre estas formas simbolicas produzidas a partir das subjetividades da vida do artista, repleta de significados particulares, mas tambem produtoras de um universo simbolico muito especifico, a saber, o espaco virtual. Para desenvolvermos este trabalho, as concepcoes de arte e de simbolo apoiadas em Suzanne K. Langer foram tomadas como nosso direcionamento teorico
