Resumo

The Beira BaixaBeira Baixa is a low-relief region that is transitional between the Portuguese Central Range and the South Portugal Planation SurfaceSouth Portugal Planation Surface. The main regional geomorphological unitGeomorphological units is a planation surfacePlanation surface cut on the phylites/metagreywackesMetagreywackes of the basement, locally with granite inselbergsInselberg and quartzite ridgesQuartzite ridges. Tectonic landformsTectonic landforms are represented, such as fault scarpsFault scarp and fault valleysFault valleys, and the main fault scarpsFault scarp are associated with thePonsul and Sobreira Formosa faults Ponsul and Sobreira Formosa FaultsSobreira Formosa fault. The culminant surface of the Lower Tejo Cenozoic BasinLower Tejo Cenozoic Basin is preserved as residual sedimentary reliefResidual sedimentary relief, being the sedimentary surface of alluvial fansAlluvial fan or Atlantic rivers prior to incision. Fluvial landformsFluvial landforms related to the incision stage are well represented, such as epigenetic valleysEpigenetic valleys, gorges, incised meandersIncised meanders, and strath terracesStrath terraces. The limited human occupation has resulted in many diversified natural landscapes being well preserved and thus available for observation, providing a detailed geomorphological record of the complex CenozoicCenozoic geological evolution.
