Resumo: O presente artigo, refazendo o percurso da eclesialidade catolica em confronto com a secular modernidade, rebusca, ao modo de notas de pesquisa, em largas linhas, alguns antecedentes historicos que permitem retomar, em melhor medida, a devida importância e o grande alcance do Concilio Vaticano II. Coloca em destaque o intento conciliar de restabelecer um dialogo compativel com o mundo moderno-contemporâneo. Se as muitas recepcoes do Concilio nem sempre possibilitaram uma resposta eclesial a altura das transformacoes de nossa historia recente, nem por isso, podemos deixar cair na descrenca do anacronismo suas interrogantes fundamentais e grandes intuicoes. Nesse particular, resgatar os vinculos que nos unem ao passado parece-nos um modo interessante de seguir em frente. Talvez esta seja a tarefa que, neste ainda inicio de milenio, nos coloca a caminho como discipulos-missionarios de Jesus Cristo. Palavras Chave: Modernidade – Eclesialidade Catolica – Vaticano II – Abstract: The aim of this article is to enhance the theme of Catholic ecclesiology in confrontation with secular modernity so as to draw on previous tendencies which prevailed before the II Vatican Council. The purpose is to re-establish a type of dialogue which is compatible with the contemporary modern world. Although the approach to the outlook of the Council did not always promote an ecclesial response at the level of the transformation of recent history, it certainly does not permit us to let it fall into oblivion or cast off on account of a lack of interest in all the fundamental and grand intuitions. In this particular point of theological analysis it seems that the links connecting us with the past are quite suggestive to be pursued in view of the future that lays ahead. This would seem to be the task to be envisaged at the beginning of the new millennium which the disciples will have to embrace and follow as missionaries of Jesus Christ.
