ResumoThis paper examines the processes used by cultural producers to create products that are at once inserted into existing canons yet distinctive from conventional patterns of creation. We identify three mechanisms – juxtaposition, transformation, and self-insertion – that explain how creators balance demands of conformity and originality into their work, ultimately leading to the formation of a personal canon. Empirically, our study draws on a comparative historical analysis of the trajectories of two producers that have become epitomes of innovation in their fields: Ferran Adrià in gastronomy and Takashi Murakami in visual arts. The paper includes a discussion of the implications of our findings to studies on innovation and cultural production.
