External morphology of the fish parasite Paravandellia phaneronema (Miles 1943) (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae), under the scanning electron microscope

ResumoespanolResumen Con base en imagenes de microscopia electronica de barrido tridimensional (SEM) de alta resolucion de Paravandellia phaneronema (Miles 1943), especie de ictioparasito endemica de Colombia, se describieron y analizaron las estructuras morfologicas superficiales desarrolladas en su proceso evolutivo de adaptacion a la forma de vida hematofaga. La atencion se enfoco en los aspectos emergentes de la funcion de estas adaptaciones y en los mecanismos que estos parasitos de la subfamilia Vandellinae han utilizado para localizar con precision su pez huesped y fijarse en sus branquias. Se concluyo que detectan al huesped utilizando los neuromastos, receptores mecanicos del sistema de poros cefalicos y de la linea lateral, y no a traves de la recepcion quimica de productos del nitrogeno catabolico, como se ha sugerido. EnglishAbstract Based on the three-dimensional images of the endemic Colombian ichthyoparasite Paravandellia phaneronema (Miles 1943) taken with a high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM), we described and analysed the superficial morphological structures developed as adaptations to their temporary hematophagous form of life. We centered on the emergent functional aspects of these adaptations and on the mechanisms used by these parasites of the subfamily Vandellinae to locate its host fish with precision adhering on its gills. We concluded that these parasites detect the host using their neuromasts, the mechanical receptors in their cephalic pores system and their lateral line, and not through the chemical reception of catabolic nitrogen products, as commonly suggested.
