Resumo

This paper describes the experience developed through extension program of university with students of Degree course in Biology from the Universidade Regional do Cariri-URCA/ Decentralized Unit in Missão Velha -CE ( URCA -UDMV ), in the semester 2012.2, with the objective of disseminating practice from recycling to ecological awareness, aligning Chemistry Education with Environmental Education in an interdisciplinary character, in addition to promoting ecological awareness of the local community through scientific knowledge, linked to the possibility of generating income through soap production. In order to carry out the experiment, the initial reflection was the disposal of waste arising from human activities, which is one of the major concerns faced by the entire world community within the difficult path to sustainability.Another point of reflection was nutritional changes in oils subjected to the frying process and its implications for human health. The reflections culminated with a study on the chemical saponification process as a recycling tool. This experience was initially developed with 30 (thirty) university students when trying to link theory and practice in the chemical reuse of residual oil for soap making, linking scientific knowledge with social responsibility. In its unfolding, the project embraced, through an agreement, a basic education school with 56 (fifty-six) students and 02 (two) teachers and through an agreement signed with the NGO -União Popular pela Vida / UPPV involved 150 (one hundred and fifty) families.Mini courses, lectures and workshops were offered to university students participating in the project and the local community. The realization of this project fostered a social / responsible attitude among undergraduate students, students in basic education and residents of the community through environmental awareness, at the same time that it undertook income generation by pointing out small efforts on the path of sustainability, contributing to the training of teachers involved.
