ResumoReviewed by: As the Shadow Rises by Katy Rose Pool Natalie Berglind Pool, Katy Rose As the Shadow Rises. Holt, 2020 [496p] (The Age of Darkness) Trade ed. ISBN 9781250211774 $19.99 E-book ed. ISBN 9781250211781 $9.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 9-12 In this sequel to There Will Come a Darkness (BCCB 9/19), Pool continues her intricately crafted fantasy world through the perspectives of Ephyra, a girl with the power to heal who takes life instead; Jude, a nineteen-year-old disgraced Keeper of the Word who has lost his Grace (magic); Anton, the underprepared Lost Prophet from the old prophecies; Hassan, the dethroned prince of Nazirah who joins the rebellion; and Beru, Ephyra's resurrected sister, fated to contribute to the apocalypse. This novel is just as immersive as the first as characters join forces or betray one another, and Pool pulls off a novel as character-driven as it is plot-driven. Nailbiting plot twists rise out of subtle foreshadowing as the story builds on the complex mythology. Heroes from the first novel could become villains just as easily as traitors make strides to save the world, while the romantic seeds planted in the first novel are just as likely to perish as they are to flourish. Readers of the first book are bound to be satisfied by this addition, and fantasy fans who love books with an epic scope are encouraged to pick up this series.
