Resumo

As the augural circuit that defined the limit of the urban auspices, the pomerium segregated the realm of imperium from that of urban, civic life. For the whole of Republican history, the Aventine held the unique distinction of being the only hill outside the pomerium, and yet inside Rome's city wall. How did the Aventine's exclusion affect the experiential topography and ideological cartography of Rome? Claudius' extension of the pomerium in 49 CE was less about incorporating this particular part of the city than reviving and transforming an antiquarian ritual to celebrate his imperium: militiae, domi, and above all Romanum.
