ResumoBasic science and biology education is one of the major challenges in the 21st century.Composed of multifactorial themes, natural science content is often complex to professionals for teaching-learning process adaptations. To add one more layer of complexity, animal study is often taught outside the students' sociocultural context. Thus, active methodologies are increasingly recognized as indispensable initiatives for education. The present work aimed at an educational practice in a school in the city of Curitiba / PR, involving the perception of students of basic education about the animal diversity present in their environment.Forest photographic record were used to identify which animals belong to the local circadian rhythm. It was possible to observe species different from those expected by the students, as well as the presence of garbage, a factor associated with a man-modified environment. With this practice, students and teachers are expected to realize the potential of hands-on learning classes, as well as encourage teachers to integrate their students with more active curriculum practices.
