Resumo

This essay analyzes the relation between the Portuguese character and the Encilhamento crisis in Brazil, as portrayed in Afonso Celso’s novel Um invejado (1895). In this text, noteworthy for its fluid plot, for its concise description and for the masterful work with fictional matter based on the main political events in Brazil at the time, the story of José Apolinário da Silva, also known as Juquinha, is told from his childhood to his death. Considering that both the Portuguese character Seixas Rocha and the Encilhamento crisis are crucial factors for this narrative’s outcome, it is assumed that these two elements - the foreigner and the economic crisis — play a decisive role in this work’s structure. For this purpose, in this novel, the social element is considered to be «a factor of the very artistic construction» (Candido, 2006: 16-17).
