Resumo

This chapter highlights the differences between the history before and after the student protests of 1997 and those of 1981: the protests of 1997 are set in the context with Ibrahim Rugova's LDK party and the politics of the nonviolent resistance and creation of a parallel society. They are considerably less influenced by the outside, less nationalist and express themselves very carefully, primarily on the aspects of human rights and democratization. Another vital difference in 1997 is the international community's reaction which classifies the crushing of the peaceful student demonstrations against the background of an already ten-year-old apartheid policy under Slobodan Milosevic. However, by 1997, Kosovo was already de facto under military occupation.
