Resumo

This paper analyzes, through the literary sources, the spiritual environment that Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, found upon arriving in Montserrat in 1522, a period still marked by the abbot of Garcia Jimenez de Cisneros (1493 to 1510). In the Benedictine monastery he came into contact with the montserratian devotional authors, members of a spiritual school with mental prayer as a methodology, clearly inspired by the devotio moderna born in the Netherlands, of which Cisneros was a follower. In the second part of the text, a rereading of the Spiritual Exercises is proposed as a manual of personal improvement with influences of the titles that were part of the devotional repertoire of the monks of Montserrat. A vision that, in turn, gives us a portrait of how one prayed and meditated in one of the main religious centers of 16th century Catalonia.
