Este ensaio consiste no esforco direcionado a compreensao do processo de verticalizacao do espaco urbano em Imperatriz/MA. Buscou-se identificar as principais bases teoricas referentes a verticalizacao urbana, para posteriormente apresentar este processo no bojo da urbanizacao imperatrizense, evidenciando a atuacao de agentes sociais como os promotores imobiliarios e a acao governamental no contexto das mudancas socioespaciais pelas quais a cidade passou. Imperatriz esta localizada no sudoeste do Maranhao, sendo a segunda maior cidade do estado. A partir da decada de 1950 destacou-se no sul do estado amparada em sua dinâmica economica, na construcao da rodovia Belem Brasilia (BR-010) alem de sua excelente posicao geografica, o que contribuiu para a consolidacao das atividades comerciais entre o sudeste e sul do Para, o norte do Tocantins e todo o centro-sul do Maranhao, contribuindo para o vertiginoso crescimento urbano de Imperatriz. Dessa forma, logo a area central tornou-se preenchida, favorecendo a expansao horizontal e, na contemporaneidade o crescimento vertical. A grande movimentacao de pessoas, servicos e capitais incentivaram os comerciantes a se instalarem em Imperatriz, onde tem destaque a expansao do comercio e a prestacao de servicos como elementos decisivos para a expansao da malha urbana a configuracao atual. Esse entendimento nos remete a importância de discutir a dinâmica da cidade e sua (re)producao via verticalizacao do espaco urbano. Neste sentido, o objetivo central do estudo em compreender o processo de verticalizacao de Imperatriz, secundariamente se engaja na tarefa de identificar a expansao deste processo no tecido urbano, observando o crescimento da cidade, a localizacao espacial da verticalizacao e os atores intervenientes para a construcao deste cenario urbano. O estudo da verticalizacao imperatrizense e entendido como um dos caminhos para se entender a cidade, uma vez que este processo tem sua parcela de contribuicao para o processo de restruturacao urbana pelo qual a cidade tem passado. This essay consists of an eff ort aimed at understanding the verticalization process of urban space in Imperatriz/MA. We sought to identify the main theoretical bases regarding urban verticalization, to later present this process in the midst of urbanization in Empress, showing the performance of social agents such as real estate developers and government action in the context of socio-spatial changes that the city has undergone. Imperatriz is located in the southwest of Maranhao, being the second largest city in the state. From the 1950s onwards, it stood out in the south of the state, supported by its economic dynamics, in the construction of the Belem Brasilia highway (BR-010) in addition to its excellent geographical position, which contributed to the consolidation of commercial activities between the southeast and southern Para, northern Tocantins and the entire south-central of Maranhao, contributing to the dizzying urban growth of Imperatriz. Thus, the central area soon became fi lled, favoring horizontal expansion and, in contemporary times, vertical growth. The great movement of people, services and A Producao do Espaco Urbano Verticalizado 83 capital encouraged traders to settle in Imperatriz, where the expansion of trade and the provision of services are highlighted as decisive elements for the expansion of the urban fabric to the current confi guration. This understanding reminds us of the importance of discussing the dynamics of the city and its (re) production via verticalization of the urban space. In this sense, the central objective of the study in understanding the verticalization process of Imperatriz, secondarily engages in the task of identifying the expansion of this process in the urban fabric, observing the growth of the city, the spatial location of verticalization and the intervening actors for the construction of this urban setting. The study of empress verticalization is understood as one of the ways to understand the city, since this process has its share of contribution to the urban restructuring process that the city has been going through.
