ResumoEvery single children's story takes place in a certain setting. When one thinks about fairy tales, for example, one immediately flies to an imaginary castle or to an enchanted forest. Sometimes the architecture itself is the main character, as with a Haunted Mansion. This essay tries to establish the setting in which modern Brazilian children’s literature takes place. After reading more than five hundred children’s books, the author found that, in contemporary children's books, the main character lives in an apartment building, has his own bedroom and a living room with a TV set. He or she comes from the middle class. The grandmother's house also takes on a very important role. That is where all the pure things in life happen. They justify the creation of an imaginary place filled with magic corners, and quarters as Bachelard said.
