ResumoThe ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.—Martin Luther King Jr As we say farewell to the year of 2020, we would like to thank our readers, authors, and reviewers for their continuous support and contributions. In 2020, the world has changed in so many ways and our journal has also faced multiple challenges. As our colleagues began treating patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Journal's editors, reviewers, and staff responded swiftly to the need to accelerate relevant life-saving publications and simultaneously manage the sudden and substantial increase in submitted manuscripts. We also faced strong public reaction to one of our articles, and we worked quickly to retract the publication and to evaluate and address the issues within our system that allowed the article to be published. The COVID-19 crisis has been the most impactful healthcare challenge in the past 100 years. The Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) rapidly provided critical information related to COVID-19 and vascular disease. We fast-tracked COVID-19 papers, and, so far in 2020, we have published 71 articles, editorials, and letters reporting not only on COVID-19-related clinical research but also on novel systems developed around the world to improve the care of patients with COVID-19 and vascular disease. We published articles on the effects of COVID-19 in patients with preexisting vascular disease and the effects in those patients with COVID-19 who, without a history of vascular disease, become hypercoagulable and developed arterial or venous thromboses, contributing to limb loss or organ failure and resulting in many of the 227,000 deaths related to COVID-19 in the United States. Vascular surgeons and vascular specialists all around the world have provided expert care to thousands of patients during the pandemic. We honor them for their dedication to our profession and to our patients. We were confronted with a number of challenges related to the publication and ultimate retraction of an article on unprofessional social media content by young vascular surgeons, published in the August 2020 issue of the JVS.1Hardouin S. Cheng T.W. Mitchell E.L. Raulli S.J. Jones D.W. Siracuse J.J. et al.Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons.J Vasc Surg. 2020; 72: 667-671Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (58) Google Scholar Although our analysis concluded that the authors, reviewers, and editors did not intend to offend or diminish women or younger vascular surgeons, the article and the surrounding public debate did reveal the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the JVS editorial leadership, editorial board, and the peer review system, the unconscious bias that exists in many editorial boards, including our own, and the changing definition of professionalism.2Gloviczki P. Lawrence P. Commitment to increase diversity and address unconscious bias.J Vasc Surg. 2020; 72: 1515Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (8) Google Scholar We used this event as an opportunity to introduce changes in our editorial and peer review system. After receiving an exceptional group of applications, including 12 men and 10 women, we selected Dr Ulka Sachdev-Ost as a new Associate Editor of the JVS with a focus on DEI. We also selected Dr Audra A. Duncan as a new Assistant Editor for reviews. Dr Duncan will take over in 2021 this challenging task from Dr Michael C. Dalsing, who provided outstanding service to JVS for many years. Most importantly, we increased the number of women JVS Editorial Board Members from 5 to 16, for a 25% representation of women surgeons on our Editorial Board. We also increased the diversity of our reviewers, expanded expertise options to include social issues, and created a “check box” for bias for each submission. To improve equity in the editorial and peer review system, we joined the Call to Action to All Surgery Journal Editors for Diversity in the Editorial and Peer Review Process.3Kibbe MR, Freischlag J. Call to action to all surgery journal editors for diversity in the editorial and peer review process [published online ahead of print August 31, 2020]. JAMA Surg doi: 10.1001/jamasurg.2020.4549.Google Scholar In 2021, we will address the conscious and unconscious bias, DEI, and the changing definition of medical professionalism in a series of editorials and special articles. We will start a JVS internship for trainees and we will work with the DEI Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) to implement and monitor each of these changes. In 2020, the JVS performed very well, with an increase in our impact factor from 3.243 in 2018 to 3.405 in 2019. For submitting so many outstanding manuscripts, we are grateful to all our authors. The top 10 papers, published in 2017 to 2018 and most cited during 2019, that contributed to our most recent impact factor are shown in the Table.TableTop 10 cited articles in 2019, published in 2017 to 20186Chaikof E.L. The JVS has 4290 Facebook, 5892 Twitter, and 16,297 LinkedIn followers. In 2020, an estimated 1,308,191 text downloads and 83,602 average monthly visits to our website, www.jvascsurg.org, occurred. An important development in 2020 was also the recording of podcasts by Audible Bleeding, with a very strong following of JVS readers who use podcasts for their education. Two important SVS documents published in 2020 deserve special recognition. In 2020, the JVS evolved, as it met considerable challenges and used them as opportunities to transform and progress. No change would have been possible without the enthusiastic support of our dedicated and hardworking JVS team, and we are extremely grateful to our editorial staff, Tyler Cosgrove and Carlee Green, Managing Editor, Alexandria Sese, and, in particular, our Senior Managing Editor, Jessica McEwan. We also greatly appreciate the contributions of our Associate Editors, Thomas Forbes, Fred Weaver, and Alan Dardik, and our Assistant Editors, Keith Calligaro, Michael Dalsing, Paul DiMuzio, and Daniel Han. We are thankful to our editorial board members, reviewers, and the contributing authors from around the world. We are also grateful to the SVS and to the sponsoring societies who support our journal. As we continue to provide you with papers in the best international scientific journal on vascular disease, we also assure you of our commitment to a new spirit of diversity, equity, and inclusion, a change we embrace. As we say farewell to 2020, we welcome the new year, 2021, and wish you and your families all the best. We are ready for the new challenges for our journal in vascular disease management. Peer review is essential to validate the credibility of scientific research by others working in the same field. The goal is to maintain the integrity of science, to improve the quality of the manuscripts, and to provide valuable input to the editors who decide the fate of the manuscripts. Peer reviewers work extra time, without compensation; they unselfishly provide expertise to our journals. We are extremely grateful for our expert reviewers for their valuable contributions. We are blessed to have excellent Associate and Assistant Editors, who helped us in 2020 to manage the increasing number of submissions, without compromising the high quality of the articles published in the JVS. Drs Thomas L. Forbes and Fred A. Weaver served as Associate Editors for Clinical Studies and made key decisions on hundreds of manuscripts. We are thankful for the expert contributions of our Associate Editor for Basic Science, Dr Alan Dardik, who also started in his new role as Editor of JVS-Vascular Science. We are indebted to Dr Keith Calligaro, for his insightful commentaries and great summaries of important non-JVS publications on vascular disease management in our Vascular Vantage Point and for his book reviews. We are also thankful to Dr Michael C. Dalsing for his expert help as Assistant Editor of Reviews and for his many years of service to the JVS. As he graciously opened up his position to new candidates for a leadership position, we wish him well in leading the SVS to new heights in the new future. Dr Paul J. DiMuzio, Editor for Social Media and Press Releases, with the help of Assistant Editor Dr Daniel Han, increased our online readership tremendously on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. We thank them for their valuable contribution to press releases, the JVS Journal Club, and the increasingly popular new feature of Visual Abstracts. We are thankful for the valuable contributions made by our excellent Editorial Board. Board members in 2020 performed an average of 17 reviews, which accounted for 40% of all the reviews performed for the JVS. In addition to the review and repeat review of a large number of original articles, our editorial board members frequently contributed to the JVS with commentaries and editorials. The Editors would like to recognize the significant contributions of those Editorial Board members who, after many years of valuable service, will be retiring from the Board this month. We also would like to welcome the new members of the Editorial Board of JVS and JVS-CIT (Cases and Innovative Techniques), who will start their assignments in January of 2021. Ahmed M.
