Resumo

The aim of this paper was to measure the economic value assigned to the Bagagem River by urban residents of Irai de Minas (MG), applying the Contingent Valuation Method to capture Willingness to Pay (WTP). 198 residential and geo - referenced interviews were carried out in the urban area of Iraí de Minas and the data were treated with descriptive statistics and application of a logit model. The main findings indicate that the interviewees were willing to pay to improve the quality of the river, and a monthly average of the WTP of R$ 21.98 per inhabitant. The logit model showed that WTP is directly related to family income and environmental awareness and inversely proportional to age and distance from the residence to the Bagagem River.Keywords: environmental assessment, Bagagem River, Willingness to Pay (WTP), environmental perception, contingent valuation.
