Resumo

The objective of the study is to outline the profile of patients admitted to an Adult Intensive Care Unit of a Teaching Hospital inthe Interior of São Paulo with sepsis and to evaluate the risk factors and clinical characteristics associated with the evolution to sepsis considering as outcomes of worsening septic shock and death. Medical records of patients in the Adult ICU were analyzed from July 2017 to July 2019, and a case-control study was carried out on these patients, considering 3 outcomes: sepsis, septic shock and death. The study included 154 patients admitted to the ICU during the study period. Of these, 105 patients with sepsis were included. The risk factors found were hyperthermia, anemia, renal failure, hyperkalaemia and the need for mechanical ventilation. Further reflection on sepsis is necessary, which is still one of the main causes of death in the ICU, causing high socioeconomic impact due to the high hospital cost and limited therapies.
