ResumoShalom Goldman begins his fascinating history of the intertwined stories of the U.S.-Israeli relationship and the arts with the engagement of Johnny Cash and June Carter in February 1968. Animated by a dream of Johnny “standing on a mountain in Galilee, preaching to the multitudes with a Bible in his hand,” June insisted that the couple spend their honeymoon in Israel. Johnny had been plagued by the personal demon of addiction, June reasoned, and the cure was to “walk in Jesus’ footsteps” (1). The trip led to a concept album titled The Holy Land (1969) with a cover of Johnny standing in a black suit on the Mount of Beatitudes and featuring on-site recordings made by a portable tape recorder, interspersed with gospel songs.
