ResumoThe objective of this work is to report the occurrence of a specimen popularly known as giant and robust fly or wood fly (Pantophthalmus tabaninus), one of the largest in the world, whose larvae feed on the roots of trees, internationally recognized and found for the first time on the south coast of the state of São Paulo, in the city of Peruíbe, neighborhood of Guaraú near the headquarters of IBIMM -Institute of Marine Biology and Environment.It is a rare and difficult species to find in entomological collections and the genus Pantophthalmus, appears with 20 species, twelve representatives in Brazil.It is of great importance the case report of the species, including the place of occurrence to map its distribution.The specimen was collected, preserved in 70% alcohol and taken to the IBIMM anatomy laboratory for studies and identification.
