As missoes religiosas exerceram um grande papel no processo colonizador do Brasil. Em especial, os Franciscanos que construiram conventos e igrejas em quase todo o litoral do Nordeste e, posteriormente, pelo interior da regiao. Seu objetivo era a conversao dos nativos a religiao catolica. Muitos dos objetos religiosos, artisticos e de uso cotidiano destes religiosos estao disponiveis para estudos atualmente. ABSTRACT Religious missions played a great role in the colonization process of Brazil, in particular, the those of the Franciscans who built convents and churches along almost all of the northeastern coast and, later, in the interior. As their objective was the conversion of the native populations to the Catholic faith, the left behind many objects attesting to their passage, including religious items, artisanry and daily use materials, much of which is available for study.
