RESUMO: Este trabalho analisa como e feita a representacao da personagem morte no texto As Intermitencias da Morte, do escritor Jose Saramago, e em sua traducao para a lingua inglesa, intitulada Death with Interruptions, sob autoria de Margaret Jull Costa, tomando como aporte teorico a Linguistica Sistemico-Funcional e usando os metodos de Linguistica de Corpus. Atraves da analise dos processos associados a personagem morte/death, constata-se que, no texto fonte, ela e descrita em relacao ao mundo a sua volta e ao mundo interno de sua mente, mais do que em termos de suas caracteristicas e relacao com outras entidades. No texto alvo, por sua vez, ela possui uma relacao mais estreita como o mundo exterior, e sua descricao e feita em termos de sua situacao no tempo/espaco e de suas caracteristicas e de como se relaciona com outros seres. ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes how the character death is represented in the text As Intermitencias da Morte, by Jose Saramago, and in its English translation, under the title Death with Interruptions and written by Margaret Jull Costa. It takes Systemic-Functional Linguistics as the theoretical framework and employs Corpus Linguistics methods. Through the analysis of the processes associated with the character death, we find that, in the source text, she is described in relation to the world around her and the inner world of her mind, rather than in terms of her characteristics and relationship with other entities. In the target text, in turn, she has a closer relationship with the outside world, and she is described in terms of her placement in time and space, her features and how she relates to other beings.
