Resumo

EnglishPublished for the first time in 1943, O agressor is the first fictional work by the Brazilian writer Rosario Fusco, who was well-known as the most active and irreverent of the young founders of the modernist journal Verde. His debut as a writer was noticed by critics who took him as hermetic and accused him of artificial transplantation of the kafkian and surrealist ambiances. In the past few years, some critics, as Ledo Ivo, highlighted the innovative aspects of this novel, but Fusco’s prose has not yet emerged from the underground history of Brazilian literature. O agressor tells the story of David, an accountant of a millinery shop who believed that his boss wanted to kill him because he had heard sounds that resembled a cat meow, but they could also be the moaning of his boss's wife. After this scene, David experiences the conflict between his psychological and real life, that is, between his inside and his outside world. This paper aims to show how this dialectic between the inside and the outside appears in the protagonist is relation with the places, especially the one where he lives. This study also tries to understand how the porosity of these two apparently conflicting “worlds” reveals David’s tragical characterization.
