His research draws upon the methods and theories of legal anthropology to study international criminal tribunals and international human rights. He recently held a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship that allowed him to complete his most recent book, Writing History in International Criminal Trials, published with Cambridge University Press (2011). Presently, Richard Wilson serves as chair of the Connecticut State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as associate editor of the Journal of Human Rights.
