Since its birth from the oyster of The Beatles’ success in 1972, CT has provided what at first seemed a miraculous view into the human body. Over the ensuing decades, it has proved its value many times in saving lives, avoiding much more invasive tests and exploratory surgical procedures, and guiding the safe and efficient management of trauma and illness; in parallel, it has undergone technological iterations that have rendered the initial once miraculous machines almost comically primitive by comparison. Yet along the way, we came to recognize that this marvel had a darker side, because it came with a cost of radiation exposure, and the bells of warning were rung regarding its potential effects, particularly among children. Image Gently® was established in recognition that “CT helps us save kids’ lives” but also in recognition of the need to “be wise, adjust for size.”
