Resumo

This paper aims to understand the trajectory of labor until the birth of puerperal women in a reference maternity. Thus, the method used was a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach, carried out at the state maternity hospital in the municipality of Caruaru, Pernambuco. The 217 puerperal women who had their births attended at this maternity hospital, who did not live in the municipality of Caruaru-PE, were interviewed. The results found showed that most of the interviewees were aged between 15 and 25 years, risk indicators during pregnancy and received prenatal care.Regarding the transfer to receive childbirth assistance, most of the study participants were attended in at least two services before admission and had to travel distances ranging from 23.7 km to 294 km.Thus, the pilgrimage of the women seeking childbirth assistance are confirmed as a public health problem. These data show the precariousness of the offer of obstetric beds in the small municipalities of the State of Pernambuco and alert to the maternal-fetal risks that a transfer during labor can bring to so many pregnant women.
