Resumo• Through the lens of art history, the article examines Tony Robert-Fleury's famous painting, Pinel Freeing the Insane from Their Chains (1876). • It illustrates the background, politics, and significance of Robert-Fleury's work in the context of late nineteenth-century France. • The import of the painting and its message in relation to modern forensic psychiatric conditions is also discussed.
