There is a significant problem regarding operation and maintenance of bridges in a majority of the municipalities in Denmark. The consequences of not dealing with operation and maintenance of bridges are often not recognized, though it can be rather serious and expensive if it is not taken care of in time. Vordingborg Municipality is handling the problem with a comprehensive operation and maintenance plan for bridges together with an annual contribution of funds from Vordingborg municipal council. By investing in principal inspections of all bridges, special inspections of the larger bridges and load carrying capacity calculations, Vordingborg Municipality has achieved detailed knowledge of the bridges' condition, including how and when to take action.
