Resumo

Libraries should begin to revise service policies to include cultural competency approaches to ensure they provide students a reliably inclusive experience with our services. Many non-LIS disciplines have established easy to borrow practices that libraries can adapt for these purposes. Revision of policies is not enough, however, and inclusive pedagogical practices provide an essential way for librarians and library staff at service desks to enact these cultural competency standards and practices in ways that directly impact a student’s experience with the library. In order to fully realize this shift, reference assessment practices also need to center the student perception of service as a primary measure to inform future service design and delivery. By focusing on the enactment of policies through pedagogy rather than adoption through standards, libraries can fully commit to creating inclusive spaces and services.
