Samba is a musical style that has been found in different places in Brazil throughout the 20th century. It has been found in rural as well as in urban areas in different ways, sometimes in connection with another style. One of its modality found in the state of Bahia is called Samba-de-Roda, played in different ways, according to the time and the social space. Our research, whose data have been collected since 1992, concerns the version found in Cachoeira, Sao Felix e Muritiba, cities located in the Reconcavo Baiano area. After a brief analysis of the most important texts referring to the samba in Bahia and to some historical information on that region, we focus on the “sambista”. Finally, we describe a performance, analysing poetical and choreographical aspects, emphasizing, however, musical information.
