The idea of development approached in the text synthesizes the civilizing project, both by the liberal and capitalist way, as well as by the social, democratic and socialist way. Development is the synthesis name of the idea of domination of nature, and to be developed is to be urban, industrialized, in short, it is to be everything that distances us from nature and that puts us in front of human constructs, such as the city and industry. The idea of development is associated with modernity - to be modern is to be developed, to be in development. The objective of the article was to raise a discussion on the social indicators of the municipalities of Campos Lindos, Formoso do Araguaia, Lagoa da Confusao, Pedro Afonso and Porto Nacional in Tocantins from 1991 to 2014, in order to verify the social and economic impacts agribusiness on the local population. The social developments that the economic activity of agribusiness can impact on the population in the regions where this activity operates have been described. The methodological procedures were based on the qualitative and quantitative method and on a bibliographic review on the theoretical debate regarding the relationship between the economic activity of agribusiness and the social conditions of the local population. Such procedures were organized and executed based on a theoretical-critical analysis of the social consequences of the installation of agribusiness on the border in Tocantins. It was concluded that the economic growth provided by agribusiness does not necessarily act adequately in the performance of social indicators in a positive way
