Resumo

I propose a lesson plan for teaching Birago Diop’s “Sarzan” (one of nineteen tales in Les contes d’Amadou Koumba) to an advanced French composition and conversation class. The goal is to introduce students to African oral literature, history, and culture while strengthening students’ reading, comprehension, conversation, and composition skills. Most of what I suggest here can be easily adapted in any introductory course on African literature or African civilization and culture, whether in an AP class or at the college level.
