sanctums of the court. But, as with the author’s prior works, the intent is not to shock but to deepen our engagement with cultural icons and literary figures within early modern Paris. Therefore, Tucker’s Paris is at once unfathomable and uncomfortably accessible: present-day civilizations may only understand black magic, for example, as fanciful exploits in legends and cinematic fiction, but the stigma of pregnancy and the access to healthcare for certain demographics is an ongoing national and international discussion. Yet, the true horror of Tucker’s book is that it is not fiction, but a factual, historically accurate account that concludes with a chronology of the Affair of the Poisons, copious bibliographical notes, a bibliography, and an index. It is only in the Epilogue that Tucker—after having spent four years of archival research, reconciling discrepancies between primary and secondary sources and learning of her characters’lives and torturous deaths—reveals her opinions on the credibility of some of the players within the Affair, namely the daughter of Monvoisin, Marguerite. Everything else revealed in the book’s thirty-two chapters is documented evidence of police reports and depositions that the author sleuthed and then artfully glued together into a casual narrative. This non-causal historicity is accessible to the early modern scholar and the uninformed, general reader alike. For scholars in higher education, the book is best for classes in French and Francophone studies, history, women’s and gender studies, and legal studies. However, students of philosophy (ethics of crime and punishment), religious studies, sociology, and sciences will also find this book valuable. Also, the book lends itself to several visualizations through the lens of the digital humanities (Mapping the Affairs of the Poisons in the City of Light as Tucker has presented it would be an exciting project, for example). For her diligent work in bringing this text to our understanding, Tucker’s work is exemplary. Now we are left in the darkness to ponder how notions of peace, pardon, hope, and charity were negotiated within a truly frightful Paris.
