ResumoThe design of multifunctional agents became a pivotal task for the development of personalized medicine. In this study, we investigated the potential applicability of mesoporous silica decorated with gold nanoparticles (MS-Au NPs) for effective X-ray attenuation in computed tomography (CT) and as a potential vehicle for drug delivery. The physicochemical properties and X-ray attenuation efficiency of prepared MS-Au NPs were systematically studied using a range of characterization techniques and clinical CT correspondingly. CT analysis revealed that prepared MS-Au NPs exhibit high X-ray attenuation efficiency ∼9.8 HU/mM (Hounsfield Units per mM of Au) as compared to other perspective metal-based nanoparticles reported in the literature. An improved X-ray attenuation efficiency can be attributed to the presence of a large amount of Au nanoparticles in a confined volume unit.
