Merrily, merrily: A total synthesis of the pentacyclic sesquiterpenoid merrilactone A starting from 2,3-dimethyl-2-cyclopentene-1,4-dione has been achieved with good stereo- and regioselectivity. Merrilactone A exhibits impressive neurotrophic activity and may be important for the development of therapeutic drugs for neurodegenerative disorders.
