ResumoOnly comparatively recently it was brought to Sicily by the Arabs (4) and, as in the past, it grows abundantly on the banks of the Ciane near Syracuse. Perhaps for this reason, in 1750 the archeologist F.S. Landolina tried to make papyrus. There is a reference to this in Danilo Randazzo's article in the annals of the Merceologia Siciliana for 1933/34 (5). Among other news the author says: 'It is not possible to compare it with the papyrus handed down by the Alexandrines, who certainly knew the secret of perfect paper-making' in that 'Alexandrine paper was pure white and very strong, while that made today does not have these qualities.
