Resumo

Effect of gangliosides on nerve regeneration in rats The authors studied the effect of the intraperitoneal administration of gangliosides (30mg/kg) for 30 days after sciatic crush injury in rats. The double-blind study evaluated nine rats which received gangliosides, and 11 rats which received tamponade solution for the same period. The sciatic function index was evaluated in the preoperative period, then in the first, fourth, and sixth week after nerve lesion. No significant difference was found between the groups. Nerve regeneration was histopathologically evaluated by the analysis of fiber density, neural tissue percentage, and average area of neural fiber, proximal and distal to the lesion, and compared to the normal limb. Furthermore, no significant difference was found between groups. The administration of gangliosides does not interfere in the quality of nerve regeneration.
