ResumoNineteen successive patients (20 feet), all of them bearing disabling arthrosis, had undergone compressive ankle ar- throdesis with Ilizarov external f ixator. An assembly with two parallel rings was used. Each ring was attached with two crossed wires, one at the distal end of the tibia, and an- other at the hind foot bones. Ten patients were of male gen- der, and nine were females. The mean age was 46 years (range, 16 to 80 years). Twelve patients (13 feet) had post- traumatic arthrosis and seven patients (seven feet) had non- traumatic arthrosis. Ten feet had deformity and seven had chronic osteomyelitis. The mean device utilization period was 12 weeks. After a minimum follow-up time of 18 months and a maximum of 44 months (29 months mean), healing occurred in 16 of 20 feet (80%). Complications included two fibrous, stable ankyloses, one pseudoarthrosis, and one pa- tient evolved to leg amputation. The authors reevaluated 14 patients (15 feet) using three different scores scales (Mazur, AOFAS, and Maryland Foot Score). They obtained satisfac- tory outcomes in nine feet (60%), and unsatisfactory in six feet (40%).
