ResumoTo the Editor. —The article by Sugar et al 1 in the November 1988 issue of theArchivesmight lead to incorrect conclusions concerning late lens complications. The article was supposedly about 024 (Hessburg) anterior chamber intraocular lens (HAC-IOL) complications; however, the authors repeatedly refer to closed-loop lenses as a class. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Ophthalmic Device Division prohibits commingling of IOL data for good reason. In fact, the HAC-IOL was not among the AC lenses in the original references 2,3 of Sugar et al. It was included in the article of Apple et al 4 ; of 351 accessioned closed-loop AC-IOLs of four styles, only 30 were HAC-IOLs. Sugar et al reported on 18 eyes treated for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) over 7½ years. Risk factors for PBK were evaluated citing findings of Taylor et al, 5 whose article was on iris-supported lenses . Sugar et al assume (erroneously)
