Resumo

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the broad headings of a standard psychiatric assessment. It provides psychiatric history, mental state examination, signs and symptoms of individual patient. The book addresses the classification systems for mental disorders, international classification of diseases (ICD-10) and diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV). It assesses suicide risk of psychiatric patients. Suicide risk is increased by a sense of hopelessness, the presence of psychiatric and medical illnesses, the presence of recurring suicidal thoughts, recent stressful events and previous attempts at suicide. The practice of psychiatry requires detailed consideration of important ethical and legal issues. This is essential as psychiatric care often requires making decisions on behalf of patients or detaining and treating patients against their will.
