ISBN 9781536208405 $16.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R 3-6 yrs Jaunty verse and rhythmic interludes guide the listener through a day in the life of cat Atticus and his child companion. Atticus spends his day snacking, sleeping in the sun, chattering at birds, and generally making his young human’s day. With plenty of cues for verbal play (like when Atticus “streeeeeeeeeeeeetches” or “purrrrrrrs”), even readers new to storytime will find this easy to perform. Maizes (On My Way to the Bath, BCCB 9/12) ends each verse on a particularly engaging nonsense rhyme (such as “Atticus Caticus, scrit-scrat, scrit-scrat-ticus”), calling to mind such classics as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Jewel-toned digital art blends smooth backgrounds, soft textures, and scribbly details, suggesting that our kid narrator may have illustrated the piece themself, adding appeal and relatability for their intended listeners. Perfect for library storytimes, bedtime reading, and feline friends, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser for audiences young and old.
